Assessment and reporting

Twice a year, teachers formally assess a student’s achievement based on the outcomes described in the syllabus of each subject. A written report using the common grade scale is sent home in the first half of the year, usually near the end of Term 2, and again in Term 4. This gives a clear picture of your child’s learning.

Assessments

We provide detailed information to students about what we expect from them throughout the year and how their work will be assessed. Students have a number of formal assessments throughout their schooling.

The school plans assessments so that :

  • students can demonstrate achievement of outcomes for the relevant stage of learning.
  • valid and reliable assessment strategies are used.
  • the timing, frequency and nature of the assessment processes are time efficient and manageable for teachers and students.

Teachers plan assessment strategies when developing teaching programs and will also make additional assessment judgements in the course of teaching and learning.

Teachers use a variety of appropriate assessments for juding student achievement.

Teachers collect and record assessment information to:

  • guide ongoing teaching and learning.
  • monitor and evaluate student progress.
  • report achievement to parents and relevant authorities in accord with school requirements and department policy.

Reporting

Our school provides parents/carers, throughout the school year, with formal and informal opportunities to receive information about and discuss their child's learning.

Reports using the common grade scale is sent home each semester.

Student reports from Year 1 to 6 will also include English and Mathematical skills checklist with a grade scale of Working Towards, Achieving and Working beyond.
Effort is shown using the scale 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 from most to least effort.

Each class schedules parent/teacher meetings in Semester 1 .

Formal Assessment

In addition some assessments are  completed during schooling. These include:
  • Best Start – a mandatory, one-to-one assessment that identifies a student’s literacy and numeracy skills at the beginning of Kindergarten.
  • National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) – reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, punctuation and grammar) and numeracy tests for students in Years 3 and 5. The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) holds the tests in May each year. Results and student reports are released in August.
  • Some students may elect to sit the opportunity class or selective high school placement tests. For more information, visit selective high schools and opportunity classes.
